Welcome aboard to all of our new members!

After a couple weeks of preparing for the acceptance of our new staff members, we’ve finally done it! The applicant pool was qualified, passionate, and enthusiastic to learn, and they all went through the many steps and stages to become part of our GlobeMed at UCLA family. The info sessions were packed and full, with many people asking great questions. It was amazing to see so many fresh faces eager to get started with GlobeMed and with so much to offer. Not to mention we had so many applicants this year, and that definitely made the decision process very difficult. But in the end after hours of deliberation, we took on an astounding 33 new members from all different majors and all different years. They are all highly qualified and we cannot wait to see what’s in store from the year.  With the combination of an enthusiastic group under the passionate leadership of Leah and Caroline (our co-presidents), with the support of the executive board, things are definitely looking big this year.

Besides our vision becoming bigger and brighter, our chapter has greatly expanded, especially when comparing the number of returners to the new faces– and we’re feeling like this year is going to be better than it ever has before! Next week is our staff retreat, and we’re going to go camping in Malibu at Malibu Creek State Park. There will be plenty of game-playing, name-learning, and burger-eating… and of course curriculum from National to get the new members (and to refresh returners’) minds on the track of global health. We’ll keep the blogosphere updated with pictures and memories soon enough.

In other news, we’ve got a movie screening coming up called “Bouncing Cats,” which we’ve teamed up with Red Bull to do. It’s a documentary about hip hop and how it can help the lives of people who have been affected by the LRA in Uganda. We’re really ecstatic about partnering up to put this on and think it’s a really unique technique to empower our generation.  We’ll be showing this screening on Nov. 14th in the evening- look out for more info on this! Also coming up in November (doing big things right?) we’re doing a blood drive. Since it’s so close to Thanksgiving, the official name for our event is: Thanks (for your blood) Giving! That will be on Nov. 19th, so save your blood until then… Last but not least is our Sepi’s Fundraiser on Nov. 20th, so come on by and bring your friends and family to score some deals, watch the game, and help us fundraise!  Sepi’s has been an amazingly generous and kind host facility for our fundraisers previously and we had so much fun that we’re doing it again! Keep an eye out in the month of November for our events!

So excited to see how our chapter will grow, and stay tuned for upcoming blog posts from our External Co-President Caroline as she tells us more about her GROW trip this summer and her internship at the national office (did you see the year in review video? well, that was her!) and also our Co-Director of Communications Mykenzie who will talk about her journey to discovering the importance of global health.

We can’t wait for what’s in store.

GMedLove,
GlobeMed at UCLA
